So here it goes, Day 1 and we are starting with an oily skin type.

Now this is my category and it can be annoying at the end of the day when all you want to look is effortlessly airbrushed but instead you look like an oil slick.  Well I have excellent news for all my fellow oily ladies out there – being oily can be a great thing!  Being oily does mean that the skin is not dry, therefore we will most likely have less wrinkles as we get older.  The drier the skin the more fine lines and wrinkles start to appear.  Ok, I’m hearing you, enough said and let’s get to the tips!  For any ladies who are pregnant, or anyone on medication for a skin condition, please consult your doctors before using any of these products.

It’s important to cleanse and moisturise AM and PM for any skincare type.  Many ladies who are oily like a stripped feel after cleansing as they feel it’s stripping excess oils.  Well you are right about it stripping excess oils but that is a bad thing!  If you do this you are causing the skin to overreact and produce excess oil because it feels dry, and this will most likely lead to breakouts.  It’s also imperative that you moisturise, but stick to a lightweight gel moisturiser to not clog the pores while staying hydrated.  Personally I don’t tone and don’t feel the need to, but if you like to tone stick to something with a low alcohol content so it does not dry the skin out.  My product tips are -

Clarisonic Mia 2 - in under 60 seconds it will cleanse 60% better than what you would with your hands, meaning any products you are putting on the skin after cleansing will absorb and act that much better and faster.  I think Mia 2 is a good entry level personally rather than the Mia, as Mia 2 has two speeds and Mia only has one.

Darphin Cleansing Foam Gel with Water Lily - this is my personal fave which I have used everyday for the last four years or so.  I love the foaming effect for my oily skin but I am never, ever dry afterwards which is incredibly important.

Philosophy Total Matteness Pore-Minimizing Mattifying Cleanser and Mask - a cleanser which can act as a mask also, so practically two products in one!

Philosophy Total Matteness Oil-Free Pore Refiner - for my ladies who would prefer to tone.

Philosophy Total Matteness Oil-Free Visible Pore Eraser Serum - apply this serum after you cleanse and before you moisturise to start with a matte base and minimised pores.  The salicylic acid in this serum helps to remove build-up of dead cells and brightens a dull complexion.

Darphin Hydraskin Light Cream Gel - this is my go-to moisturiser and I use AM and PM.  I love the lightweight gel formula which still keeps my skin nourished even through the cooler months.  Don’t forget to moisturise your neck and décolletage too!***

Dr Brandt Pores No More Anti-Ageing Mattifying Lotion - this moisturiser is mattifying without a dry feeling.  A perfect base to follow your makeup with, and it’s anti-ageing!

Darphin Mattifying Fluid - I have just recently purchased this moisturiser to wear through the day during summer, and I will keep my hydraskin light cream gel for night.  It gives a matte complexion while leaving the skin hydrated and looking revived.

Now while there is not an eye cream specifically for oily skin, you may wish to use a lightweight formula.  Two that I would recommend is Eve Lom’s Eye Lift for firming, lifting and smoothing out the delicate eye area, or the Ren’s new Vita Mineral Active 7 Gel which cools, refreshes and firms the eye area, while reducing the appearance of puffiness and dark circles.

GlamGlow Youthmud Tinglexfoliate Treatment - a mask and exfoliate in one!  Use once or twice a week to clear and firm skin, and tighten pores!

Dr Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Daily Face Peel - yes it’s a little expensive but the results and reviews speak for themselves.  I’ve been using these daily at PM only to deal with my pigmentation, but they are also great for improving the appearance of skin tone, texture, firmness, clarity, radiance, plus moisturise to leave skin soothed and balanced. Ideal for oily skin as well as those suffering acne and rosacea.  Step 1 will sting a little but that is totally normal!

Mecca Cosmetica To Save Face SPF30 Facial Sunscreen - this sunscreen is the holy grail!  It’s a non-oily and non-whitening formula which not only prevents premature ageing due to the damaging effects of the sun, but it also provides a matte finish which is a perfect makeup base.  A big bonus is I promise you it does not smell like sunscreen.  For someone who complains about her pigmentation I cannot believe it took me so long to start using a sunscreen.  It’s essential ladies, an absolute must!!  Yes, even for us oily types.

To keep oil at bay it’s important we use a primer, not only for the longevity of our foundation, but also to help with minimizing pores and oil control.  Our foundation needs to be oil free and/or a long wear formula to get us through the day!  My cosmetics tips are -

Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer - Hourglass has a beautiful range and perfect for anyone who is looking for oil, paraben, fragrance, gluten and vegan free products.  This water resistant primer is a best seller which helps to minimise the appearance of large pores and any fine lines.  No need to be put off by the colour as it blends into the skin seamlessly and helps to conceal any redness also.  This has very quickly become a cult, must-have product.

Peter Thomas Roth Max Anti-Shine Mattifying Gel - I put this on over my primer (before foundation) through the t-zone to keep oil at bay.  It provides a super smooth finish over your pores, giving you the perfect base to apply your foundation over, and will keep oil at bay through the day.

Stila Stay All Day Foundation and Concealer - this oil and fragrance free foundation provides a medium to full coverage with a matte finish, making for a flawless yet natural look which works to conceal any imperfections or blemishes on the skin.  Alot of makeup artists have this one in their makeup kits for it’s long wear and also the wide range of colours, which ensures that nearly everyone will get a match.  The bonus concealer in the lid tips this one over into the absolute yes pile for me!

Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Even Finish Foundation SPF15 - another long wear foundation with a medium to full coverage, matte finish and oil free.  It has a super long wear of 12 hours even in humid conditions, and will protect your skin from future sun damage thanks to the SPF 15 with antioxidant vitamins C and E.  For anyone who has porcelain skin screaming out “I can never find the perfect foundation match”, Bobbi Brown is for you.

Stila Illuminating Powder Foundation - perfect to brush over the t-zone and finish your makeup with.  Don’t be put off by the word illuminating.  It will not leave you dewy!  It is the most subtle of glows that to be honest is hardly visible at all.  If anything it lifts your complexion to keep it from looking dull.  A bonus with this product is once you have bought the compact at the start, you only need to buy the refills which is a cost saver!

Hourglass Oxygen Mineral Powder - a soft, silky powder which absorbs oil, providing a matte finish while nourishing the skin with Vitamin E.

And that concludes Day 1 for an oily skin type!  I hope you all learnt a few tips or discovered a few new products you’d love to try.  Let me know in the comments what you found most helpful.  See you all tomorrow for Day 2 where I’ll be looking at a combination skin type.  If your skin is dry or flaky in parts, while the centre t-zone is oily, or you have breakouts or rosacea, Day 2 is the one for you.
