So what exactly is a normal skin type?! Normal skin in a nutshell is when you don’t see any problems on your skin. Does your skin feel equally normal in all areas (so not oily or dry)? And any oiliness or dryness you may experience is easily fixed? You are lucky enough to not have enlarged pores, and minimal fine lines and wrinkles? Your skin tone is even without any pigmentation or brown marks/spots on your face? If you are saying “yes, yes, yes!” welcome to Day 3 and a normal skin type!
In saying this it does not mean that a normal skin type does not have any concerns that they would like to address with a great skincare regime. Truth be told, if you are not looking after your normal skin type problems will start to occur, and the same goes if you are using the wrong skincare products. You don’t want to use products that will overdry your skin, therefore causing excess oil production which will clog your pores and then cause breakouts. The best approach is to use products that won’t dry your skin, are lightweight and non greasy, and will assist in fighting the signs of ageing.
So no doubt if you are a normal skin type you still have skin concerns such as anti-ageing and sun protection. The products and tips I have suggested below will assist in keeping your skin fresh, clean, radiant, protected, and help to fight the signs of ageing. Let the advice begin!
Peter Thomas Roth Gentle Foaming Cleanser – this gentle foaming cleanser will remove makeup and dirt from the skin without drying or stripping essential oils from the skin. It’s also formulated with wheat amino acids to hydrate and strengthen the skin, and vitamins A, C and E.
Eve Lom Cleanser – this is my PM cleanser and it’s great for a normal skin to use once a day. I would recommend using it as your PM cleanser because it’s highly effective in taking off makeup, including waterproof eye makeup and lipstick. I love the muslin cloth that you use to compress on your face and also use to wipe off the cleanser. It provides a soft exfoliation that leaves your skin feeling super soft and firm. Lastly, it’s been voted the best cleanser in the world by Vogue UK for the last 10 years. Need I say more?!
Mario Badescu Enzyme Cleansing Gel – a non-foaming cleanser that will not dry the skin. It’s formulated with Papaya Extracts that are exfoliating Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA’s) which will help break down any buildup of dead skin cells that cause the skin to look dull, leaving skin fresh and healthy.
If you wish to use a toner I would recommend the Kiehls Calendula Herbal Extract Alcohol-Free Toner which is effective for normal to oily skin types. It’s formulated with select herbal extracts to gently cleanse and soothe without the use of alcohol or harsh synthetic drying agents.
Philosophy Hope In A Jar – Endorsed by Oprah, a long list of celebrities and dermatologists, this souffle like moisturiser will help to fight signs of ageing like wrinkles, skin discolouration, rough texture and dehydration. It will also gently exfoliate your skin, improving the skin’s radiance.
Mario Badescu Collagen Moisturiser SPF15 – this ultralight moisturiser will not only plump your skin and keep it looking smooth, but it also has sun protection in it which is a bonus to keep your skin free from sun damage.
Perricone MD Face Finishing Moisturiser – if you want fast anti-ageing results you go Perricone. This moisturiser is hailed by many as the ultimate fighter against signs of ageing as well as dramatically improving your skin’s texture. So if you want to keep your skin looking “normal” and fight the signs of ageing, this is the moisturiser for you.
For a normal skin it’s still imperative that you use an eye cream AM and PM to fight the signs of ageing and keep the skin around the delicate eye area hydrated. The more hydrated and plump it is, the less fine lines will appear! A great eye cream is yesterday’s recommendation or if you are looking to combat dark circles Kate Somerville’s Cytocell Dark Circle Corrective Eye Cream is fantastic.
I would recommend looking to Day 1’s sunscreen recommendation. It’s perfect for normal and oily skin types. You will love the non-greasy finish and I promise you it does not smell like sunscreen. To keep your skin looking free from pigmentation it is absolutely essential that you wear sunscreen every day. I apply mine after I moisturise and before I prime.
TREATMENTS & EXFOLIATORS
Kate Somerville ExfoliKate Intensive Exfoliating Treatment – this exfoliator is what Kate Somerville is known for and it would have to be one of the best I’ve come across for someone who prefers a grittier exfoliator. It’s great for cleaning out your pores 1-2 times per week, and it’s formulated with cinnamon which gives it a beautiful smell and will also give you a tingling feeling.
Philosophy Microdelivery Peel Kit – there is a reason this product sells out all the time and I found out after using it. I felt I had instantly brighter and more radiant looking skin after using it just one time. It’s a two step system that not only exfoliates but delivers Vitamin C and peptides to the skin which will refresh your skin.
Peter Thomas Roth Gentle Complexion Correction Pads – if you want to prevent the signs of ageing and regulate skin cell turnover these double-sided pads are for you. One side gives a gentle cleanse and the other a pore-refining exfoliation. They also have a peach bellini scent which makes them a pleasure to use!
Looking at cosmetics for a normal skin is like cosmetics heaven, because you practically have your choice of whatever you like! Of course you will still require a primer to assist with the longevity of your foundation and providing a great base for it. In terms of your foundation you can look to what coverage and finish you are looking to achieve. Would you like a sheer, medium or full coverage? Would you like a matte or dewy finish? Some great choices are -
Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer – this is the original primer out of the Smashbox range. For anyone who read yesterday’s tips they would have learnt that Smashbox invented the primer and are Max Factors grandsons! This primer will leave you with an incredibly smooth complexion, providing the perfect base for your foundation.
Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer SPF15 - a normal skin type can use this primer (as well as an oily skin type as shown in Day 1). This water resistant primer is a best seller which helps to minimise the appearance of pores and any fine lines. No need to be put off by the colour (white) as it blends into the skin seamlessly and helps to conceal any redness and even out the skin tone. This has very quickly become a cult, must-have product.
Tip: I highly recommend all foundations to be buffed into the skin for an airbrushed effect. The paddle style foundation brushes leave streaks, whereas using a foundation buffing brush in circular motions will leave a flawless finish. I recommend the Hourglass Retractable Foundation Brush or the Hourglass Blush Brush. I actually use the Blush Brush to buff my foundation into the skin after seeing an International Makeup Artist from France (who worked for another brand, not Hourglass) buff all his brand’s products into the face using the Hourglass Blush Brush. That was enough for me and I haven’t looked back!
NARS Sheer Glow Foundation and Sheer Matte Foundation – the sheer glow is a lightweight formula which provides hydration and a natural, radiant finish. The matte is oil free which helps to absorb excess oil throughout the day. Both are a weightless, buildable medium coverage.
Hourglass Veil Fluid Makeup SPF15 – if you are looking for a dewy finish with a medium to full buildable coverage this is the foundation for you. This foundation is best buffed into the skin and the formula helps to stimulate the production of collagen and improve the skin’s texture. Being oil and fragrance free, and with an SPF15 is a big bonus.
Stila Stay All Day Foundation and Concealer – (my foundation!) if you are looking for a medium to full coverage with a matte finish this foundation is for you. This oil and fragrance free foundation provides a flawless yet natural look which works to conceal any imperfections or blemishes on the skin. Alot of makeup artists have this one in their makeup kits for it’s long wear and also the wide range of colours, which ensures that nearly everyone will get a match. The bonus concealer in the lid tips this one over into the absolute yes pile for me!
And that wraps up Day 3! Tomorrow is the final day and I’ll be looking at a dry skin type and how best to care for it. See you all tomorrow! xx
