Welcome to Day 4!  On this final day we are looking at how to care for a dry skin type.  A dry skin occurs due to the outer layers of your skin losing their ability to maintain normal moisture levels.  Your skin will start to have a dry, tight, uncomfortable feeling and flakiness or redness may also occur.  Other causes to a dry skin can be overexposure to the sun and sometimes even the skincare products you are using due to their irritating or drying ingredients.

A dry skin is in desperate need of some TLC and this post can help you with that!  Your skin needs products with barrier-repairing ingredients to restore the moisture levels, and you need to stop damaging the outer layer of your skin immediately by stopping the use of soaps, products with high levels of alcohol and menthol, limit the exposure to hot water, and use non abrasive scrubs.

So enough with the chat and let the product advice and tips begin!

Eve Lom Cleanser – this is my PM cleanser and it’s also great for a dry skin to balance and renourish.  I would recommend using it as your PM cleanser because it’s highly effective in taking off makeup, including waterproof eye makeup and lipstick.  I love the muslin cloth that you use to compress on your face and also use to wipe off the cleanser.  It provides a soft exfoliation that leaves your skin feeling super soft and firm.  Lastly, it’s been voted the best cleanser in the world by Vogue UK for the last 10 years.  Need I say more?!

Korres Milk Protein 3 in 1 Cleanser – this cleanser is ideal for very dry or dehydrated skin that doesn’t take well to being cleansed with water.  The Milk proteins not only gently cleanse, tone and moisturise, but they also offer nourishing properties and form a hydrating film on the skin.

Mario Badescu Aloe Vera Toner - a very mild toner suited for sensitive or dry skin.  This alcohol free toner will soothe any irritation and unclog pores.

Mario Badescu Facial Spray with Aloe, Herbs & Rosewater – a hydrating facial spray to use over your AM and PM moisturisers for an extra hydration boost, or over your makeup to rehydrate.  A perfect spray for both winter when your skin is feeling dry, and summer when you need a cool rehydration!

Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream – this lightweight daily moisturiser will leave your skin hydrated with a comfortable feel for 24 hours, even during the harsher winter months.  It’s unique blend of ingredients helps to reduce moisture loss from your skin while absorbing the moisture you need from the air!

Darphin Hydraskin Rich Cream – I’m a fan of Darphin’s Hydraskin Light for an oily skin, and this is their answer for a drier skin and it’s equally as beautiful.  This luxuriously soft cream will moisturise and nourish your skin, leaving it feel hydrated and comfortable.

Philosophy Hope In A Jar – Dry Skin – Hope In A Jar was put on the map by Oprah, and they have also developed the moisturiser for a dry skin.  This moisturiser is a treatment to soothe and comfort dry, and even more irritated and sensitive skin.  Even the most traumatised or thin, dry skin will benefit from this antioxidant-rich treatment cream.

Kiehls Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado and Peter Thomas Roth Mega Rich Anti-Ageing Cellular Eye Creme are both rich and hydrating creams for the delicate eye area.  If you are looking for hydration only Kiehls is perfect, and if you are looking to firm, tighten and fight the signs of ageing around the eyes then the Peter Thomas Roth one will be for you.

I am going to recommend the same sunscreen I have for all skin types, which is the Mecca Cosmetica To Save Face SPF30 Facial Sunscreen.  As long as you have the right skincare regime happening for your skin – ie. cleanser and moisturiser (toner if you wish/need) – then this sunscreen will work for your skin.  Although it has a matte finish it is not a drying feeling.   It’s a non-oily and non-whitening formula which not only prevents premature ageing due to the damaging effects of the sun.  A big bonus is I promise you it does not smell like sunscreen.  For someone who complains about her pigmentation I cannot believe it took me so long to start using a sunscreen.  It’s essential ladies, an absolute must!!

Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask – if you buy one product I highly recommend this.  A lot of flight attendants swear by this to provide ultimate hydration to the skin.  Think of it as your PM moisturiser, because you will cleanse and then leave this on overnight.  Wake up to more hydrated, plump and soothed skin.  The Avocado and Apricot Kernel Oil will provide a deep hydration and the Japanese Seaweed repairs your skin’s barrier to prevent future dehydration and signs of premature aging.

Darphin Intral Redness Relief Recovery Balm – for anyone with dry skin who may wish to use this as their PM treatment/moisturiser.  It will nourish the discomfort and redness of a dry skin.

Peter Thomas Roth Viz-1000 Intense Hydra Serum – this serum has a 75% concentrate of Hyaluronic Acid that will give your skin the ultimate hydration boost that it needs!  It achieves hydration by attracting 1000 times its weight in water from the moisture in the air!  It’s magic!  Apply serum before your moisturiser.

Dr Lipp Original Nipple Balm for Lips – I highly highly recommend this to anyone with not only cracked or dry lips, but for anyone with dry areas.  I started getting dry spots on my hands from excess washing at work, and after applying this the same soothed and rehydrated within hours.  Ignore the title – this can be used on dry areas on the body too.  It’s a small tube but well worth the money.  It’s great for dry or sensitive skin including eczema.

Dr Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Daily Face Peel – Yes it’s a little expensive but the results and reviews speak for themselves.  The alpha beta acids will help skin cell turnover improving the appearance of skin tone, texture, firmness, clarity, radiance, plus moisturise to leave skin soothed and balanced.  Step 1 may sting a little but that is expected.

Egyptian Magic All Purpose Healing Skin Cream – a healing balm that helps to heal a myriad of concerns including dry and cracked skin, and is also great for sufferers of eczema and psoriasis.

No doubt you are after a hydrating foundation and would prefer a dewy finish to avoid any product sitting in dry areas.  The one thing you must MUST do for your dry skin is ensure you have a nourishing skincare regime to soothe and hydrate your dry skin.  Without this your skin will be dry and no foundation will sit well on your skin.  We don’t want dry flaky bits that are highlighted by the foundation!

Hourglass No.28 Primer Serum – this intensely hydrating primer is a serum and primer in one.  Not only will it strengthen your skin’s natural moisture barrier, but it will also protect your skin against environment damage and leave your skin dewier and younger looking.  It has a beautiful smell that will take your mind straight to a beauty therapy salon, with 14 essential oils, 10 plant oils, and four vitamins.

Smashbox Photo Finish Hydrating Primer – if you have had a browse through the previous skin type posts you may have come across the mention of Smashbox, and that they are not only the grandsons of Max Factor but they invented the primer!  This primer will immediately hydrate the skin and seals in moisture for hours.  It’s oil-free, lightweight, and will also extend the wear of your makeup.

Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation Stick – the ease of the application is a winner on it’s own!  Draw a few quick lines across your face – cheeks, down your nose and chin, across your forehead – blend, and then you’re on your way!  Due to it’s application you can also control the coverage and it is a more moisturising formula so not great for an oily skin.

Hourglass Veil Fluid Makeup SPF15 – this foundation has a beautiful, dewy finish with a medium to full buildable coverage.  It is best buffed into the skin (please see yesterday’s brush recommendations)and the formula helps to stimulate the production of collagen and improve the skin’s texture.  Being oil and fragrance free, and with an SPF15 is a big bonus.

And that completes Day 4 and this “How To Care For Your Skin Type” series!  I hope everyone has found this blog post series helpful, and has come away with some handy tips and new products on their must have list!  Let me know in the comments below what skin type you are and what product and/or tip you found most helpful.
